HUMANISTIC & INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY

What is Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy?

You have the healing and power to change within you. The therapist's role is to support and facilitate the client to find their way to healing.

Humanistic psychotherapy recognizes the relationship between therapist and client is central to healing. It is through developing a confidential, non-judgmental and trusting relationship that the safe space needed for therapy is created.

As an integrative psychotherapist, Sarah draws from a wide range of therapeutic approaches and integrates them in her work with clients. Seeing people holistically, as a dance between mind, body, and soul, Sarah approaches each client as an individual and focuses on tuning in to their needs so that she can utilize the approaches that are best suited to them.

An underlying goal of integrative psychotherapy is to bring a person into more conscious relationship with the different parts of themselves providing new power and choice in the face of challenges, and everyday life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT DOES HUMANISTIC AND INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE?

During weekly sessions, the therapist holds space for the client to talk about whatever is on top for them at that point in time. Clients are guided to explore their experience both through the lens of how their past is shaping it and through staying present to their emboddied experience in the here-and-now.

Each therapy experience is shaped by who the client is, how the therapist and client relate to each other, and by what the client needs from the therapy. So in practice, each therapeutic process will be quite different.

The therapist will support clients to feel and share things they may not have had space to experience fully before and facilitate new insight which provides the possibility of transformation. As clients are given the opportunity of opening up and releasing what they have been carrying within them, they become free to find new ways of living their lives and expressing themselves.

The therapist will collaborate with the client, to find new personal meaning and challenge them to relate to themselves and the world in new ways.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The first step will be an initial consultation where the client and therapist can get to know each other and explore the possibility of working together. If it's agreed that it seems like a good fit and psychotherapy might be helpful, a weekly session time will be agreed.

Weekly sessions last for 50 minutes.

Therapy usually begins on an open-ended basis to allow room for exploration of issues and development of a trusting relationship. Psychotherapy can vary greatly in length depending on the therapeutic relationship, the client's needs. Short-term psychotherapy is possible and can often prove very useful. Psychotherapy can also, and often does, last for a number of years. Most research shows there is a correlation between the length of therapy and the reported the benefits to the client.

True to the client-led nature of this therapeutic approach it is ultimately the client's decision to end when they feel they are finished with therapy.
